Offside’s Premier League A-Z: A is for away fans

A is for the away fans…

After such a dire World Cup for England it seems fitting to begin Offside’s A-Z alphabetical countdown to the start of the Premier League with one of the true strengths of the English game: the away fans.

Mark Leech: Newcastle fans watch the title slip from their grasp in 1996.
Mark Leech: Newcastle fans watch the title slip from their grasp away to Nottingham Forest in 1996.

Every season they travel the length and breadth of the country to cheer on their heroes. Rarely do they let the grumbles about price and travel times cure them of their addiction to the football if they can somehow continue to afford the expenses involved.

The Premier League fan is relatively lucky in that respect, unless they hail from Southampton or the North East. Most trips in the English top flight are relatively simple, at least in relation to the marathons undertaken further down the pyramid. Spare a thought for the away support of Carlisle United and Plymouth Argyle down in League Two this season who will have to travel to the ends of the Earth (or at least of England) to follow their clubs in their travels.

Simon Stacpoole: Manchester United fans make a hasty getaway outside Anfield.

So there it is. The first of our alphabetical countdown to the first day of the 2014-15 Premier League season. It’s A for away fans: the noble and rather unique life blood of the English game. We salute you!
